59 El Camino
DRAG BOAT SET!!!!
This is a 1/64 scale casting.
These pics are pretty good, but, I can't stress this enough,
they ABSOLUTELY
do not do this paint justice!!
The
castings were stripped, sanded and polished slightly before any
body mods or paint was done.
I have an EXTREME amount of time in this set...BUT....Its WAY COOL!!!!
I guess I will start with the 59 El Camino!!
This is from the 100% Line and no body mods were necessary, but,
the hood was adjusted so as to open very freely and close much better
than it did stock.
The "Tri Power" 409 engine has been detailed slightly
and there was a TON of Alclad Chrome used for the body/window/tail
light/hood trim as well!!!
This was the easy part!!!!
Now for the DRAG BOAT!!!!!
This "was" a Matchbox Sea Speeder Casting to start with,
but, as you can tell, it was gutted and mainly just the hull and
deck were utilized!!!!

The first thing was to remove all unnecessary parts which included
the wheels on the bottom (wheels?? on a boat??), the holes were
filled and sanded smooth!! Next I removed more than half of the
rear interior parts and smoothed out the inner part of the hull
as well!! This made room for the JL Top Fuel Dragster BLOWN HEMI!!!!!
I also added near true to scale plug wires and also slightly overscale
plug boots.....but, hey..it IS a "Marine Application"
so they may be closer to scale than I think!!! LOL!! The engine
has a base of Marine Epoxy which formed a perfect fit with the hull
area and it is secured with a machine screw!!!
The seats and dash are donated from a Racing Champion Cuda!!!
I inverted the dash however so it looks more like a boat dash than
a car version now!! It took quite some shaving and fitting for these
parts, particularly the dash which also utilized a marine epoxy
form fit!! When they fit properly, I primed them with Adhesion Promoter,
shot HOK white over them...accents are Candy Red on the seats and
the dash was detailed along with the steering wheel!!!!
The next part to be fitted was the windshield....donated by a HWs
65 Corvette and heavily shaved with a sharp exacto blade until it
fit nicely!!! I painted the frame and after all paint was done,
glued it securely in place!!!!
Also Alclad Chrome details were done to the deck rails and a few
other areas!!!
The
final part was the "JET" Propulsion outlet and shroud!!
A
hole was drilled in the rear of the hull and I soldered together
two sizes of brass tubing to give the appearance of having a smaller
jet and slightly larger shroud!!! Once this part was shaped, filed,
and sanded smooth I polished it to a near chrome finish and cleared
it!!! Then it was installed in the hull!!

Now
what about that TRAILER??!!!!!
Well, I am glad you asked!!! LOL!!!
Heres a pic of how it looked prior to paint!!
It may not be pretty in this pic, but, it gives you an idea of the
construction!!!
I hand measured, cut, bent, filed, ground and "otherwise manipulated"
brass tubing and flat stock, fishing lures and even curtain rod
hangers to get what you see here!!!! Believe it or not!!!
The entire thing is SOLDERED together for superior strength!!!!
Then it was filed, sanded, primed and repeated until it was smooth
enough to paint!!!

Its paint is a dark Candy Ruby Red and I even Flamed the fenders!!!
Also painted in some tail lights with alclad chrome and candy red!!!
Plus, I added thin strips of rubber at each contact point so the
paint on the hull of the boat would be safe and it also make the
boat rest very securely on the trailer!!!!!

ALL paint is ALL AIRBRUSHED (as with all my kustoms) PPG and
House Of Color AUTOMOTIVE paint.
PLUS!!! Alclad Chrome Lacquer!!!!
All parts started with a BLACK URETHANE base color, and if the parts
were plastic or otherwise a slick material, Adhesion Promoter was
primed on prior to any other paint!!!
Then highly reflective candy base and flames were added with Alclad
Chrome!!!! Then, the Candy FADE was done TWO COLORS!!! Starting
with Candy Tangerine and seamlessly faded to Candy Cherry Red!!!!!!!!!
Once this coat was dry, the Alclad Flames were repeated TWO MORE
times on the hull of the boat and followed with additional Candy
FADE after EACH flame pattern layer!!!!
Finally, Clear was shot on in three coats making the finish Pretty
Darn SMOOTH!!!! This is SO INCREDIBLY KOOL that words fail to describe
what your eyes actually see in person!!!
NO KIDDING...... The Flames are VERY DEEP, Ghosty, and the whole
thing is VERY NEAR "SpectraFlame" Colors!!!!
